After she arrives

First week with your new helper: what to cover

A helper arriving in Singapore on her travel day

The first week after your helper arrives or starts work is when you set the duties, rest day arrangement, daily communication and household safety handover. This checklist covers what to prepare before she arrives, what to cover on day one, and how to review the routine by the end of the first week. MOM’s three settling-in measures should be identified and their actual deadlines recorded separately.

Before she arrives

Day 1: arrival and house tour

Days 2–3: supervised routine

Days 4–5: increasing independence

Days 6–7: review and adjust

Safety handover checklist

Prepare this before she starts. Keep any clinician-supplied care instructions private between the family and the care provider; do not publish dosing details or collect medical data through this site.

Communication in the first month

The first month is an adjustment for both sides. Short daily check-ins during the first two weeks help catch misunderstandings early. The right frequency after that depends on the household; some families find a weekly check-in enough, others prefer daily. Write the agreed routine down so both sides can refer to it.

If something needs care beyond the helper’s experience, involve a family member or qualified professional rather than expecting the helper to manage clinical or complex tasks independently.

If things are not working after the first few weeks, see your options before the situation gets harder to resolve.

Questions

First week — common questions

What should I prepare before my helper arrives?

Sleeping space that meets MOM’s accommodation requirements (adequate space, privacy, ventilation, personal storage), a written duty list, emergency contacts and a neighbourhood orientation plan.

How do I set expectations without micromanaging?

Write the weekly schedule down, work alongside her for the first few days, then give specific feedback. Review and adjust at the end of the first week.

What if things are not working after the first week?

Talk about the specific issue first. If it cannot be resolved, the options page explains replacement, transfer and other routes. Acting early is better than waiting.
