A voluntary gesture

Considering an ang bao or gift for your helper?

A helper arriving in Singapore on her travel day

This guide covers an extra, voluntary ang bao or festive gift for your domestic helper. Check the employment agreement and any applicable source-country requirements before deciding which payments are optional. It is separate from her agreed salary, any contractual bonus and her rest day entitlements. The value, timing and form are your choice. This guide helps you think through the occasion, your helper's preference and your budget without confusing a gift with an employment obligation.

A gift is not salary and salary is not a gift

Pay the salary declared to MOM, honour agreed contractual payments, and follow the applicable rest day rules. These obligations are separate from an extra voluntary gift. A gift sits outside those terms. Treating a gift as a substitute for an agreed payment, or making a payment conditional on receiving a gift, confuses both sides.

If your helper's contract includes a 13th-month payment, an annual bonus or any other agreed amount, that is a contractual commitment, not a gift. Source-country employment norms or the helper's own contract may provide for payments that do not exist in Singapore law but are still binding between you and her. Do not assume there is no obligation without checking the actual agreement. MOM's salary guidelines set out the payment and record-keeping rules.

What a gift does not replace

If you have just hired a new helper

If you are still settling into a new routine, use the first-week checklist to agree household expectations. You can decide separately whether to mark an occasion with a gift; ask about her preferences rather than assuming a welcome gift is expected.

If you are planning the overall hiring budget

Gifts are not part of the hiring cost, but they are part of your annual household budget. The hiring cost breakdown covers salary, levy, insurance, bond and agency fees. Budget for gifts separately rather than treating them as a surprise expense.

A gift is voluntary. An agreed payment is contractual. Keep the two separate.

Questions

Ang bao and gifts: common questions

Am I required to give my helper an ang bao at Chinese New Year?

An extra festive gesture can be voluntary, but first check the actual employment agreement and any applicable source-country requirements. An agreed bonus or 13th-month payment is a separate employment obligation and must not be relabelled as an optional gift.

How much should I give my helper as an ang bao?

This guide does not prescribe a standard amount or industry benchmark. The amount is your choice based on your budget and the gesture you want to make. Keep the amount private between you and your helper.

Should I give a gift during my helper's home country festival?

If you would like to acknowledge an occasion she observes, ask her which festival matters to her and what she would appreciate. Keep an extra gesture separate from payments required by the actual contract or applicable rules.

Can I give extra rest time instead of money?

Yes, as a voluntary gesture on top of her legal rest day entitlement. This is separate from her required weekly rest day and the compensation rules for working on a rest day. Do not offer additional rest in place of an agreed payment.

Is an ang bao the same as a bonus?

Not necessarily. An ang bao given as a voluntary festive gesture is a gift. A bonus written into the employment contract, such as a 13th-month payment, is an agreed employment term with its own obligations. Keep them separate in your records and in how you explain them.
