What to check before you accept a transfer

The single most useful document is her MOM employment history printout, pulled from Work Permit Online. Licensed agencies are required to give it to you unedited, and to let you acknowledge receipt in writing. Read it properly:

• How long each placement lasted. One short stint means little. Three in eighteen months is a pattern worth asking about.
• Why she is transferring. Employers relocate, families change, contracts end naturally. There is often no problem at all — but you should hear the reason and be able to ask her directly.
• Whether her skills match your actual household. A helper who did well with a working couple may not be the right fit for a bedridden parent, and that is about experience, not effort.

Transfer versus a new helper — an honest comparison

Transfers are not automatically better. A new helper from overseas can be the right call when:

• You want someone with no established habits from a previous Singapore household.
• You need a specific nationality, language or skill that is scarce in the transfer pool.
• You are not in a hurry and starting cost is less important than fit.
