Housekeeping

A helper for the running of your home

Helper ironing in a Singapore home

A housekeeping helper handles the daily upkeep of your home: cleaning, laundry, ironing, changing linen, washing up and the household marketing. What makes a placement work is not the task list — nearly every helper can clean — but the match between her pace and your home. A five-room flat with two working adults is a different job from a landed house with three generations under one roof, and we shortlist against the actual workload rather than a generic profile.

What the role usually covers

What actually decides the match

Tell us the size of your home, how many people live in it, whether anyone is home during the day, and how you like things done. Households that want a specific standard — ironed bedsheets, a particular way of handling the kitchen — should say so upfront. It is far easier to match on that at the shortlist stage than to correct it three months in.

Also tell us about stairs, pets, and whether you expect window or ceiling-fan cleaning. Working at height is a safety issue with rules attached, and it is better settled before she starts.

Housekeeping alongside other duties

Most Singapore households want housekeeping plus something else — cooking, a child, an elderly parent, a dog. That combination is the real brief, and it changes who fits. A helper who is excellent with a newborn may not be the one you want managing a large house on her own. See cooking, child care, elderly care and pet care.

Nearly every helper can clean. What decides the placement is whether her pace matches your home.

Questions

Housekeeping — common questions

Can a housekeeping helper also cook?

Often yes, but say so before shortlisting. Cooking ability varies a lot and is worth testing at the interview — ask what she cooks at home and what she has cooked for previous employers.

Can she clean windows or the outside of the flat?

There are MOM safety rules on working at height for foreign domestic workers, including restrictions on cleaning the exterior of windows above the ground floor. We will explain what is and is not permitted before she starts.

How long before she settles into our routine?

Realistically a few weeks. A written routine for the first month — what happens on which day — shortens it considerably and prevents most early misunderstandings.
