Taking your helper on a family trip

Taking your domestic helper overseas with the family

An Apex Maids helper holding cooking and housekeeping placards

Taking your helper abroad on a family trip is a different situation from her going home on leave or you travelling without her. It requires checking four things separately: whether the destination allows entry for this purpose and her nationality; whether her Singapore Work Permit and passport are valid for the trip and return; whether your insurance covers her during the actual trip and activities; and what duties and rest arrangements you agree for the trip. Each country has its own rules, and the purpose of travel matters. This guide covers the planning decisions and where to check; contact the relevant embassy, insurer and authorities for the specific requirements.

Four decisions to make before booking

Why country-specific checks matter: two examples

The rules below are examples of how different countries handle this. They show why you must check the specific destination rather than following a single set of instructions.

Japan

The Embassy of Japan in Singapore (page dated 2 September 2026) directs visa submission and collection to the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC), operated by VFS Global. JVAC’s domestic helper accompanying employer checklist (updated 23 April 2026) explicitly covers Singapore Work Permit holders accompanying employers for child or elderly support on a temporary visit. It lists requirements including the helper’s passport, Work Permit validity covering the trip and return, pass information, the employer’s explanation, relationship evidence where applicable and trip details. This is a specific application route with its own conditions, not automatic permission.

United Kingdom

The UK has a separate Overseas Domestic Worker visa for a domestic worker accompanying an employer, with its own eligibility conditions including at least one year working for that employer. This is a different route from a standard UK visitor visa and applies specifically to this purpose. Check the full current eligibility on GOV.UK before assuming your helper qualifies.

Other destinations will have their own rules. Always check the specific embassy or consulate in Singapore for the country you are visiting.

Returning to Singapore

Before departure, confirm her Work Permit validity covers the return date and that her passport meets Singapore’s re-entry requirements. A valid Work Permit and passport do not by themselves guarantee admission; check ICA’s current entry requirements.

The ICA SG Arrival Card (SGAC) includes Work Pass holders within its long-term-pass definitions. For required submissions, the SGAC must be submitted within three days including the arrival day. However, residents and long-term-pass holders arriving through Woodlands or Tuas checkpoints are exempt, as are travellers transiting without clearing Singapore immigration. The SGAC is not a visa; it is a health and travel declaration, and the service is free.

MOM’s overseas leave guidance for MDWs covers passport checks, embassy requirements and return preparation. Its leave and levy provisions concern the described leave scenario; do not automatically apply them to an employer-accompanied trip without checking whether the same provisions apply.

Questions

Travelling with your helper — common questions

Can I take my domestic helper on holiday with my family?

It depends on the destination country’s visa rules for domestic workers accompanying employers, your helper’s nationality, her Work Permit validity and your insurance coverage. Each country has its own requirements. Check the specific embassy or visa application centre in Singapore before booking.

Does a Singapore Work Permit replace destination visa permission?

No. A Singapore Work Permit authorises employment in Singapore. Destination countries set their own entry rules for domestic workers accompanying employers, which may require a separate visa or specific application route. Check the destination’s requirements for the purpose and your helper’s nationality.

Does my helper need to submit an SG Arrival Card when returning?

ICA includes Work Pass holders in its long-term-pass definitions for the SG Arrival Card. Required submissions must be made within three days including the arrival day. Residents and long-term-pass holders arriving through Woodlands or Tuas are exempt, as are travellers transiting without clearing immigration. The SGAC is not a visa.

Will my helper’s insurance cover her overseas?

Ask your insurer. The medical and personal accident insurance required under Singapore’s Work Permit rules may not automatically cover overseas travel, specific activities or particular destinations. Confirm coverage in writing before departure.
