Preparing helper support after a hospital discharge

When a family member is discharged from hospital, the household’s support needs often change quickly. A domestic helper can assist with daily tasks such as meals, personal hygiene support, mobility assistance, medication reminders and household routines. The discharge team should define which tasks need professional care and which a helper or family member may safely support with appropriate instruction. AIC’s discharge preparation guide covers the clinical planning; this page focuses on what the helper’s household role looks like alongside that.

Household and daily tasks a helper can support

A domestic helper’s role during recovery centres on daily household and personal support:

Ask the discharge team about care boundaries

Rather than applying a fixed rule about what a helper may or may not do, ask the discharge team before the person comes home:

Previous employment experience is not proof of competence for a new patient’s needs. The discharge team’s guidance for this specific situation takes priority.

Before the discharge: a family planning checklist

Use this alongside AIC’s discharge preparation guide, which covers the clinical planning:

If you do not already have a helper

If the discharge creates a need for additional household help, include the changed daily tasks and the professional care already arranged in your brief to Apex. A helper with relevant elderly-care experience can support the household while the family manages the medical side, subject to current candidate availability and the normal hiring timeline. See the elderly care placement page for how to describe the role, and the grants and levy concession guide for financial support that may apply.

If the person needing care is not elderly, the same planning applies: separate the helper’s household and personal-support tasks from the professional care based on the discharge team’s guidance, and brief both the helper and the care providers on who does what.

“

Ask the discharge team which tasks need professional care and which a helper or family member can safely support with instruction. Plan both before the person comes home.

Questions

Helper support after hospital discharge — common questions

Can a domestic helper replace professional care after a hospital discharge?

Do not assume a helper’s experience establishes the care your relative needs. Ask the discharge team which tasks need professional care and which daily tasks a helper or family member may support with appropriate instruction, training or supervision. Use that plan to define the household role and backup support before the person comes home.

Should I hire a helper before or after the hospital discharge?

Before, if timing allows. A helper who starts before the discharge can learn the household routines and be briefed on the changed daily tasks. Hiring depends on current candidate availability and the normal Work Permit timeline; include your target dates in your brief so the agency can check what is realistic.

Where can I find professional home care services in Singapore?

AIC’s care options page (aic.sg/Caregiving-Support/Knowing-Available-Care-Options) describes community services including Home Nursing and Home Medical. Your hospital’s medical social worker can also help arrange these before discharge.

Can I get financial support for hiring a helper for elderly care?

Households with an eligible elderly member may qualify for MOM’s concessionary levy and AIC’s Home Caregiving Grant. See the grants and levy concession guide on this site for the current eligibility criteria and how to apply.
