Evidence before choosing

To choose a helper for an elderly parent, compare the person’s daily support needs with the candidate’s actual duties and training. “Elderly-care experience” can describe very different work. Record what the helper has done, what evidence is available and what requires professional instruction or additional support. Apex handles eldercare helper placement enquiries; ask which relevant experience and qualifications can be verified for the current shortlist.
Describe mobility, communication, ordinary duties, family support and any relevant training you need checked.

Describe an ordinary day: companionship, meals, household work, appointments, and the personal assistance your parent needs. Say which tasks family members or professionals handle. Explain the language your parent uses and how instructions would be shared.
Also disclose stairs, equipment already used under professional guidance, overnight support and whether another adult is available. The goal is a workable role description. A helper’s previous job title does not tell you whether its responsibilities match your home.
Mark missing information as needing confirmation. Do not fill gaps with an assumption about nationality, years in Singapore or a profile photograph.
For example, “companionship and meals for a mobile parent, with family managing appointments” is a different brief from “daily personal assistance after a hospital discharge.” These are illustrative descriptions, not Apex placement records. Ask the treating professional to explain support or training needed for the actual person.
The Agency for Integrated Care’s Caregivers Training Grant supports approved caregiver courses. A domestic helper may qualify when she is the main caregiver of a care recipient who meets AIC’s criteria. Eligibility, course approval, available support and any payment must be checked with AIC and the training provider.
AIC’s page links to a training catalogue and explains how to contact a provider. Ask about the course language, practical instruction, suitability for your parent’s needs and how completion is recorded. This is an external training route; it is not an Apex course, a placement inclusion or a promise that a candidate has already completed training.
Household assistance and companionship should be distinguished from nursing or other clinical work. If your parent needs professional care, arrange advice on which tasks require a qualified professional and which can be delegated after appropriate instruction. Do not use a hiring interview to teach lifting, medication changes or medical procedures.
Write down who gives instructions, who is contacted when needs change and who covers the helper’s rest. If the role includes both eldercare and housework, discuss conflicting demands in the same brief rather than assuming that care takes no time.
Share the brief with Apex’s elderly-care placement service, then review relevant biodata and interview the candidate. Current availability, duties, training evidence and the hiring route need checking individually. Read the transfer helper page if you are considering someone already in Singapore, and the cost guide before agreeing to a quotation.
Employment history, a course certificate and an interview establish different things. None is a substitute for checking the actual role.
Questions
Ask about the previous person’s daily support needs, the duties the helper performed and who supervised or shared the work. Compare that account with available employment records and training evidence. Clarify gaps before choosing.
AIC says a domestic helper may qualify when she is the main caregiver of a care recipient who meets its eligibility criteria. Only approved courses qualify. Confirm the current requirements and arrangements with AIC and the training provider.
This page points to AIC’s external training information. It does not advertise an Apex course, include training in a placement package or confirm that every available helper is trained.
No. Agree the household support role and seek professional advice where nursing or clinical care is needed. Relevant experience or a training certificate does not turn a domestic helper into a qualified nurse.
