Choosing your childcare arrangement

Choose between an infant-care centre and a live-in domestic helper by comparing the care you need, the support available and the full cost of each arrangement. A centre provides care during its agreed operating hours; a helper’s duties, relevant experience, working routine and rest need to be agreed for your household. Neither arrangement removes the need for a backup plan. If employing a helper fits your decision, Apex Maids can discuss a child-care shortlist. Apex is a helper placement agency, not an infant-care centre.
Share your child’s age, the hours and duties you need help with, adult support at home and your preferred start date. Current candidates and suitability must be checked.

Write down a normal working day, including travel time, and mark who is responsible for your baby at each point. A centre place may suit a family seeking care away from home during a defined part of the day. A live-in helper may suit a household that needs child-care support alongside agreed domestic duties and can take on the responsibilities of an employer. Some families combine centre care with help at home; the roles still need to be clear.
This is a planning comparison, not a claim that either option is safer, better for development or suitable for every child. Ask each centre about its own programme and arrangements. For a helper, assess the individual candidate rather than treating an “infant care” label as proof of newborn experience.
| Decision | Infant-care centre | Live-in helper |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Check opening, drop-off, collection and closure times for that centre. | Agree the daily duties, family support, working routine and rest. Living at home does not mean continuous availability. |
| What you assess | Discuss the centre’s programme, staff communication, routines and terms before enrolling. | Check the child’s age in previous work, actual duties, supporting records and interview answers. |
| Household work | Plan cooking, cleaning and other work at home separately. | Agree which tasks fit around care and which another adult will handle. |
| Costs | Request the centre’s net fees after any confirmed subsidy and its additional charges. | Compare the candidate’s quotation, recurring employment costs and later obligations. |
| Backup | Ask about closures and attendance policies, then decide who covers gaps. | Plan for rest days, leave, illness and any period without a helper. |
ECDA says a child must be at least two months old at admission to infant care. That does not establish a vacancy or a place at your preferred centre. ECDA directs parents to LifeSG’s preschool search service; contact shortlisted centres to confirm the programme, place and proposed enrolment date.
For a helper, the intended start date also needs checking against the candidate’s availability and hiring route. A transfer helper is not automatically available immediately. Do not leave a gap between the end of parental leave and the start of your chosen arrangement without a separate plan.
Ask a centre for its written fee schedule, deposits, notice and refund terms, and any additional charges. Confirm any subsidy for your own circumstances before subtracting it. ECDA’s subsidy guidance sets out citizenship, enrolment and applicant conditions; a headline subsidy is not a quotation for your family.
For employing a helper, put the following on the other side of your worksheet:
Keep one-off and recurring amounts separate and compare the same period. Apex’s helper cost breakdown explains the categories; request the actual candidate-specific quotation before deciding. This comparison does not publish an unconfirmed Apex package price.
If you want both arrangements, write a combined role rather than assuming a helper is free for every household task. Include the times your baby is home, any agreed collection arrangements, another child’s routine, cooking, housework and the adults available to help. Ask the centre about collection arrangements and assess each proposed duty with the candidate.
When two young children are involved, use the existing baby-and-toddler household brief. It focuses on overlapping duties and adult support, rather than repeating this choice between arrangements.
Ask the centre what happens during closures or when your child cannot attend. For a helper, agree how your family covers rest days, leave or illness. MOM’s rest and well-being guidance explains employer responsibilities, including rest and suitable accommodation. A live-in arrangement is not a promise of care throughout every day and night.
If you are choosing support around delivery rather than ongoing care, the separate confinement-nanny versus helper comparison addresses that decision. Apex places domestic helpers; it does not supply confinement nannies or centre places.
If your comparison points to a helper, send Apex the household brief and ask for suitable current biodata, an interview and written costs. Use the infant-care interview checklist to check experience. A shortlist is a next step, not proof that a particular candidate is available or suitable.
Start with the hours and responsibilities your family needs covered. A cheaper headline price does not tell you whether the arrangement works.
Questions
Compare your centre’s written net fees after any confirmed subsidy with the full cost of employing a helper, not salary alone. Include initial charges, recurring employment costs and backup arrangements over the same period. The answer depends on the centre, candidate, household and applicable terms.
A family considering both should define each role, the hours the child is home, other household duties and adult support. Confirm centre arrangements and assess the proposed work with the helper candidate before committing.
ECDA directs parents to the preschool search service on LifeSG. Contact the shortlisted centre to confirm availability, programme, fees, enrolment date and operating arrangements. Search results do not by themselves confirm a reserved place.
No. Apex Maids is a domestic helper placement agency. If employing a helper suits your household, Apex can discuss a child-care brief, check current candidates, share relevant biodata and arrange interviews. It does not supply infant-care centre places or confinement nannies.
